Letter to the Editor: D.A.R.E
It’s Time to Get the Facts

Dear Editor,

Why are people still being told half truths and misinformation about the disease of addiction to alcohol, drugs, and prescription drugs? D.A.R.E. does not explain that it is a disease of body and mind from a biological imbalance of the body that is hereditary.

The American Medical Association declared it a disease in 1956. It is chronic, progressive and leads to death or insanity without intervention. Why not save money, time and effort by promoting programs in the schools and community of free talks by recovering people sharing their experience, strength and hope. Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-anon, and Alateen give their time generously when requested. They offer speakers, panels, and pamphlets to anyone requesting them. Al-anon helps family and friends of those addicted; Alateen help teens with addicted family members and friends. Federal Way has meetings during school time for their students.

Prevention is a myth. When the public is told that these people are sick and do not make sane decisions or function in society appropriately, some understanding may bring compassion to help those in pain and misery. Students, families, and employees need to realize that to speak up is the only way to find appropriate help and stop the progression to death. Drug abuse earlier called addiction may be politically correct, but it kills those sick because it perpetuates false information. The truth will set people free of their illness. Programs can not stop a disease. Ignoring the facts in this computer and technological age is a crime. If D.A.R.E. supported needed treatment, the tide could turn. They are not reaching those who need help. It is time to have truthful information for appropriate action resulting in real results for a recovery of health and happiness.
